The Country

As the second smallest and most densely populated country in the world, Monaco is known for its extravagance and wealth. Monaco is known for its the annual Formula One race, the Monaco Grand Prix. The royal family of Monaco, the Grimaldi Family, has been in power for hundreds of years and Prince Albert II is currently the reigning monarch of Monaco and head of the House of Grimaldi.

Fun Facts:

  • One third of the citizens of Monaco are millionaires.

  • Citizens of Monaco are not allowed to gamble in the Monte Carlo Casino.

  • It would take a person less than an hour on average to walk across the width of the country.

My Experience

Monaco is one of the most affluent, luxurious countries I have ever been to. Seeing side-streets filled with Ferraris and Lamborghinis while  the majority of people wearing expensive suits was a truly unique experience. The food, although expensive, was extremely fresh and delicious. I felt very safe walking around the micro state, although had a few steep hills at times.

I was in Monte Carlo 3 weeks before my 18th birthday, and because of that, I was not able to go inside the Monte Carlo Casino. I was there with my parents and my dad said he would go inside and get me a €5 chip. My dad is not a gambler, so I knew he would only be inside for a few minutes. When he came out I jokingly asked him if he won any large amounts of money, and he laughed and said he did. I didn’t think he was serious, but he said when he went in he put a €5 chip on number 13 for roulette, just to say he gambled in the casino. To his surprise it actually came up 13, and he immediately cashed out his winnings and came outside.  This happened just as the casino opened, so he was the first person on that table for the day and the employee apparently was rolling his eyes at my dads good luck. I got my €5 chip, my dad won a considerable amount of cash, and next time I am in Monte Carlo I plan of putting €5 on number 13 to see if I can keep the luck going.

Apart from the luck my family had, Monaco was still incredible country to visit. The weather was perfect, the people were friendly, and I hope to visit again soon.
